Cant delete Folders. 'Item not found' is message i get.?

I've been trying to get rid of a number of empty folders in my doents but cant figure out how. When I try to delete them, the message I get is; "Item Not Found" Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:/Users/Hughes/Doents. I Opened up Computer from the Start menu, and right-clicked on the drive the folders are on...then clicked on Properties at the bottom. Then I clicked the tools tab, and clicked on check now under error-checking. I chose automatically fix... is ticked, and clicked ok. Still have the same issue. I'm using Windows 7. What should I do next??
