Is it true that Republicans want to end affirmative action?

Why would they want to do this? Do they know how hard it is for minority kids in the ghetto sometimes. I dont mean to say they're racist, but this is just short-sighted. Look at all the gains that have come about in the last half-century and they want to reverse all of this? Why? What is their reasoning for this?
