Automotive question: I took my 94 Honda in for a front end alignment at one of those tire places.?

In the process (after telling me that it needed a four wheel alignment b/c it's a Honda), he called me and said that it also had coolant and oil leaks (possible, but never noticed that before), and an axle problem. How do I know if they are just trying to get more money out of me (69.99 for the alignment), or if they are really doing me a favor? I know that there are good mechanics out there, but I have been so screwed over with them before that I am very wary. This car is high mileage (over 250,000) and I want to make sure I am not just throwing money away. Thanks!
