How to make a short band radio work and get interesting radio stations? help!?

I have a short band radio an Eton E100 to be exact. It's supposed to be a world band receiver but I can't get it to work properly Right now I am in Colombia Does that affect it in any way!? I need hlp on getting local stations and international radio stations with news and stuff.. can someone help me!!
