Why do democrats get a nice portion of the middle cl vote?

Seems like Democrats heavily favor minorities. They like to have the government involved in welfare, free healthcare, affirmative action, housing development programs and many other programs that give out free stuff for people who do not work. Why do hard working whites and even hard working minorities support them? They use our hard earned tax dollars and give people who don't want to work all kinds of free things.
