Is this estimate for panel beating excessive?

A few weeks ago, I had a small incident with a car parked on the side of the road. I was driving to close and collided with the side of the parked car. I pulled over to look at the damage, it appeared that my car had left paint on his, but i hadn't taken any of his paint off. I don't think it is scratched, but maybe just a little pushed in. The damage is about 50 cm long, 10 cm wide and is from the middle of his drivers side door to a little bit on the front panel part. I left my name and phone number, and the owner got back to me with a quote of $1000. I realised that the damage would be costly, but i thought $1000 sounded a bit excessive, and most people who i've spoken to agree. I was wondering if anyone might be able to offer a more knowledgeable estimate to this? The car i hit was a black ford falcon ute, fairly new looking. The owner mentioned that he was going to get some other damage repaired at the same time, i wondered if i might be paying for this too...
