Is Freon Gas R-12 legal?

My dad has a 1993 Honda Accord LX Sedan, F22A1 stock motor, and he said that his car for the air condition takes R-12 Freon Gas. But we are dropping an H22A1 motor into his car, would the 1993 Honda Prelude H22A1 motor take the R-12? or does he need to use a different, upgraded number R-.....??
